Random Lengths Lumber Market Report

Framing lumber producers came to the market aggressively in search of trading levels. The market¡¯s weakness, however, kept many buyers planted firmly on the sidelines, waiting for a bottom to be found. Persistent weakness in futures added to buyers¡¯ caution. More snow in the Midwest kept consumption under wraps in this region. Weather remained a key topic in traders¡¯ discussions of the market¡¯s woes, but most agreed that at this point there was far more to it (see Through a Knothole).

Random Lengths Panel Market Report

Structural panel prices plummeted. OSB sales kicked into gear at midweek, and a number of producers sold heavy volumes. Sales prices covered wide ranges, but it usually took deep discounts to pull buyers into the market. The tone of the Southern Pine plywood market remained soft, and pricing was sharply two-tiered. Many buyers sat on their hands, not wanting to buy into a falling market. Western Fir plywood sales were mixed, and traders were in price discovery mode in an uneven week.
