| Prices of most framing lumber species finished the month on a
downward trend, led by Western S-P-F. The notable exception was
Southern Pine, which stayed on an upward track, although its
trajectory flattened. Most traders saw little hope for marked
improvement in the fourth quarter. Volatility in financial markets and
fading hopes that Washington will do anything constructive to help
housing or the broader economy dampened moods. The slowdown in orders
from China prompted more offers of Canadian S-P-F into the U.S.

Sales of plywood and OSB finished the month on a slow pace. Order files at
Southern Pine plywood plants held in the weeks of October 10 and beyond. New
orders that reached producers were light, as secondaries filled most dealers¡¯
needs with quicker deliveries and prices that trailed mill quotes by $5-15 on
most sheathing items. Sales of western Fir plywood failed to keep pace with
production. Traders spent most of their time scrambling to find trucks or cars
to ship orders on time. Activity in OSB was quiet, and prices were flat to
down.
