| The framing lumber market stayed on a modest upward track. While
demand in the field was measured, enough buyers sought fill-in
purchases to feed a mild but steady flow of orders back to the mills.
With production reined in, supply and demand were judged to be close
to a balance, with the scale tipped slightly in favor of the
suppliers. The Random Lengths Framing Lumber Composite Price edged up
for a third straight week. Another weak close in futures, with no
convergence with cash, left Canadian S-P-F traders wary.

The Southern Pine plywood market took center stage in structural panel markets
following news that Georgia-Pacific was taking three plants down sometime
within the next seven weeks. Secondaries wasted no time picking up their
purchasing Monday, and the activity stayed particularly strong through
Thursday. Some prices on the eastside gained as much as $45. Activity in the
South sparked sales of western Fir plywood, but price gains were much more
measured. Sales of OSB were unaffected by the plywood surge, and prices were
flat to down.
