U.S.: Lumber and panel market report ---- Week 34 2011

After a slow start, trading picked up Wednesday in most framing lumber species. Southern Pine was a major exception, as prices fell sharply; weak sales through August led to swelling inventories, and producers took aggressive action with the approach of month-end. Hefty drops in SYP and early discounting in other species resulted in a $5 drop in the Random Lengths Framing Lumber Composite Price. After being shook by an earthquake Tuesday, buyers on the East Coast braced for Hurricane Irene. However, neither event had much of an impact on the broader lumber market.

The approach of Hurricane Irene seized the spotlight in structural panel markets. With 65 million people in the storm's projected path, it was the talk of the OSB market Friday morning. Some traders were puzzled by the market's relatively muted response. Southern Pine plywood producers and their customers cited the storm as a key to the pickup in sales. However, most noted that a round of replenishment was probably due prior to the coming holiday weekend. Western Fir plywood secondaries were in need of replenishment. The hurricane threat tipped the scales for some.
