| The framing lumber market hit the long midyear weekend in the
U.S. and Canada with mostly firm to higher prices. Sales were by many
accounts better than expected. Distributors replenished thin
inventories bled down through what was a disappointing second quarter.
Meanwhile, overall demand was judged to be a tad better, as more
seasonal weather aided consumption. In Southern Pine, random dimension
prices were narrowly mixed, with decent demand noted from the
Northeast.

Structural panel trading lacked energy. OSB traders searched for
reasons to feel optimistic about the market, but came up with little.
Most described demand as stagnant, and a few mills opened to small
price concessions. Southern Pine plywood traders' attention was drawn
to the eastside, where rated sheathing was available from one plant at
deep discounts. Other producers were rarely willing to accept
double-digit counters. Facing uneventful sales and shrinking order
files, western Fir plywood producers invited counters as the week
progressed.
