| Price trends in framing lumber were mixed. The South showed the
most strength, while prices in the West and Canada were generally
soft, but stayed close to previously established levels. In all
regions, buyers focused on keeping inventories as lean as possible.
Strength in Southern Pine was attributed in large part to treaters,
who approached producers for additional volumes after securing their
2012 contracts with big box retailers. Low inventories across the
distribution pipeline were also a factor.

Plywood set the pace in structural panel trading. OSB sales ranged
from steady to ho-hum, and most prices drifted sideways. Southern Pine
sheathing prices were a moving target on Friday, as they rebounded off
midweek lows amid a more energetic trading pace. Discounted offerings
dried up by late Wednesday or early Thursday. Mill closures in the
South left their mark in the West, where western Fir plywood mills
filled the void early in the week with programs that extended order
files to the week of November 28.
