Random Lengths Lumber Market Report

Framing lumber trading quieted as buyers stepped back to digest inventories and take stock of the market¡¯s fundamentals and its next likely move. There were lots of opinions, but no real consensus, with some traders anticipating a retracement in prices, and others sensing continued need and pent-up demand that could push prices higher. While there were cracks in prices, they were not widespread. They were most evident in Western S-P-F; after a weak close of the January futures contract, some producers peeled back quotes in the cash market or opened to counters on prompt loadings.

Random Lengths Panel Market Report

Trading faded in structural panel markets. OSB mill prices flattened and the focus turned to the secondary level, where loads in most regions were available quicker and cheaper. Sales of Southern Pine plywood were quiet at both the producer and secondary levels. Producers were content to ride order files that reached into the first two weeks of February. Evidence of demand, represented in part by housing starts news Thursday, was not readily apparent in western Fir markets amid continued sluggish mill sales.
