U.S.: Lumber and panel market report ---- Week 26 2012

The price trend in framing lumber continued to point downward, but sales picked up in some markets. In Southern Pine, Coast, and Inland species, trading picked up after midweek. Canadian S-P-F, however, struggled through a mostly quiet week. Some of the activity was attributed to buyers covering needs before taking all or part of next week off. With national holidays in both Canada and the U.S. next week, traders¡¯ off days were all over the map. The Random Lengths Framing Lumber Composite fell $7, to $318.

Price trends in structural panel markets were mixed. OSB covered the gamut, with prices up in some regions, down in others, and others were flat. Softness was most apparent in the South, but discounts were usually small. Southern producers often shipped to the West, where loads delivered well below previously published levels. Southern Pine plywood producers were able to push order files into the week of July 9 or beyond, but some lowered prices in the middle of the week to get this accomplished. Western Fir producers boasted lengthy order files and sold at modest premiums.
