U.S.: Lumber and panel market report ---- Week 12 2012

The framing lumber market drifted through a week that some producers described as the slowest of the year to date. Digestion of earlier orders and a sense that the early 2012 market run was getting long in the tooth drove buyers to the sidelines to see what developed as the first quarter neared its close. Cold weather in the Pacific Northwest was more than offset by unseasonably warm temperatures from the Inland West eastward. Nonetheless, the pause in trading caused price trends to flatten or soften, and the Random Lengths Framing Lumber Composite Price slipped $1, to $301.

Structural panel markets plodded through a sluggish week. OSB sales were quiet in most markets, and mill prices were flat or down. Much of the week's action took place at the secondary level, where sharp discounts could be had from wholesalers seeking to clear their positions. Another slow week at the producer level had buyers wondering if the Southern Pine plywood market was still taking a breather or if prices were about to crack. Several western Fir plywood producers reported sales perhaps as sluggish as any week this year.
