U.S.: Lumber and panel market report ---- Week 10 2012

Framing lumber prices continued to gain amid a more modest but nonetheless steady pace. Trading perked up for some mills Thursday, as futures rallied to about match the cash market ahead of next week's close. Some traders cited a major export order for China booked by a Canadian producer as a catalyst for the market. Meanwhile, logs tightened in the West, and steady-to-active sales followed through in Southern Pine. The Random Lengths Framing Lumber Composite Price advanced $7, to $297.

Structural panel sales faded. OSB sales slowed in most regions, although the South got a shot of business late in the week. Mills continued to book orders, and prices finished higher in all regions. Southern Pine plywood producers acknowledged a slower sales pace, but long order files prompted them to keep upward pressure on prices. Although phones were quiet at western Fir plywood mills to open the week, a burst of inquiries reached producers Wednesday and Thursday, and most of those turned into orders.
