U.S.: Lumber and panel market report ---- Week 25 2012

With some exceptions, prices of framing lumber declined amid a slow to spotty sales pace. Producers who were busiest were the ones open to negotiating prices and tallies. Weakness was most evident in Std&Btr, #2, and #2&Btr random dimension, but prices of studs also turned downward. Exceptions to the trend were upper-grade items, including Fir #1&Btr and Select Structural, and S-P-F and Fir&Larch MSR. Limited supplies were a factor, but steady demand from truss plants was also cited.

Structural panel sales slowed. Another quiet week of sales left a few mills with holes to fill in their shipping schedules for the week of June 25. Most, however, were booked into the weeks of July 2 or 9, and some order files reached late July. Southern Pine rated sheathing prices were mixed, with reports on the sales pace from producers varying greatly. The pace of new orders for western Fir plywood slowed modestly, although urgency to replenish thin inventories remained apparent.
