More Hardwood Plywood Being Manufactured in
EU |
Plywood production in Europe The Brussels based Federation Europeénne de l'Industrie du Contreplaqué (FEIC) reported that plywood production in Europe (i.e. EU and in FEIC member countries Belarus, Latvia, Poland Slovenia and Switzerland) increased marginally, by about 1% to 3.17mil cubic metres in 2001 compared to 2000 (for 2000 : 3.15mil. cubic metres). The most significant development was the shift in production to plywood grades of hardwoods. Some 34% of the total production - the largest single share - was accounted for by birch plywood, replacing softwood which dominated production output in 2000. Poplar plywood output was also higher last year accounting for 24 % of the total production. Beech plywood output in Europe fell in contrast to 2%. The share of softwood products fell to 33% of production. Plywood products from tropical woods also dropped, and accounted for just 8% of 2001 production. Plywood imports into Europe increased in 2001 to 5.15mil cubic metres (up from 4.74mil ), the increases coming mainly from Latvia, Finland, Spain and Holland. Imports from South-east Asia as well as North America continued to drop last year. |
