California Proposes New Upholstery
Flammability Standard The California Bureau of Home Furnishings and Thermal Insulation has drafted an update of Technical Bulletin 117, which covers upholstered furniture flammability standards. The BHFTI says the update reflects advances in science and product technology. The Association of Woodworking and Furnishings Suppliers, however, says that the polyester and foam currently used in furniture will not pass the new standards, and that fabric choices that would pass are likely to be more toxic and less comfortable. The proposed Technical Bulletin can be downloaded in .pdf format at BHFTI's Web site at http://www.dca.ca.gov/bhfti/. In addition, the Bureau is accepting comments until July 1, 2002, by mail at 3485 Orange Grove Ave., North Highlands, CA 95660-5595. |
