Canadian Wood Production Decreases |
OTTAWA, March 11 (Xinhua) -- Wood production in
Canada dropped by 1 billion board feet last year due largely to a softwood lumber dispute
with the U.S., a new survey has found. The decreased amount of wood is enough to build more than 70, 000 new single-family homes, says the study published in the March issue of the Canadian forest magazine Logging and Sawmilling Journal. The study found it was a ''year of just plain survival in the face of the great uncertainty in the industry surrounding the U.S.-Canada negotiations on softwood lumber.'' Talks to resolve the dispute resumed last fall, with Canadian and U.S. politicians negotiating throughout the weekend. Last fall, the U.S. imposed a preliminary 19.3 percent countervailing duty on Canadian softwood. Canadian lumber also faces a preliminary 12.6 percent U.S. anti-dumping duty which is to be effective in April. Last week, the Canadian government launched a World Trade Organization (WTO) challenge against the crippling U.S. duties on Canada's softwood. |
