Europe:OSB Successfully Conquers Europe |
| OSB successfully conquers Europe Evaluating the current market situation during their last meeting on 28 February in Brussels, the OSB producers within EPF concluded that OSB has successfully pursued its expansion in Europe. During 2001 European OSB consumption grew by 29%, amounting to some 1.4 million m3. OSB successfully took market share in new timber frame housing, but also in packaging, repair and renovation as well as in Do-It-Yourself markets. Also exports to non-European destinations were strongly on the rise, whilst imports from North America are considered to be negligeable. Given the general economic slow-down of 2001, the growing acceptance of OSB by the market was regarded as very promising. The buoyant European demand for OSB was also reflected by the considerable decrease in overall stocks throughout the year 2001, despite the coming on stream of four new plants. Besides the absorption of the stock quantities, the strong demand even allowed for production to set new records totalling 1.6 million m3, which represented an increment of 28% compared to 2000. As no new investments are announced for the near future, the stage is now set for working towards reaching full capacity of the newly built plants to satisfy the increasing demand. |
