Current Comparison of Energy Sources
According to PPA, no other heating fuel can currently compete
with pellets in terms of price. The heating cost comparison is
based on the fuel’s calorific value. It does not take into
account the efficiency of heating systems.
- Pellets: 8.30 euro cents per kilowatt-hour
- Heating oil: 13.20 euro cents per kilowatt-hour
- Natural gas: 16.80 euro cents per kilowatt-hour
- Electricity: 30.60 euro cents per kilowatt-hour
How PPA Determines Prices
PPA has been tracking pellet prices in Austria on a monthly
basis since 2006. To do so, the industry association collects
data from more than 50 fuel dealers. According to its own
figures, this covers more than 70 percent of the total volume of
fuel traded. Its survey thus serves as a reliable indicator of
market price trends. PPA calculates the average price by
excluding the two lowest and the two highest dealer reports. The
survey of dealers generally takes place during the first week of
the month. PPA publishes its results about three weeks later.
