In the first four months of 2023, Brazilian exports of raw
timber and honey posted a sharp decline, with losses of nearly
40% in volume and more than 30% in foreign-exchange revenue.
These products, which represent important niche markets for
family farming, are facing challenges that directly affect small
producers.
Impact on honey exports
Honey, a product closely associated with family farming, posted
a significant drop in exports. Between January and April 2023,
export volume fell from 11,800 tonnes to 7,000 tonnes, while
foreign-exchange revenue declined from $37.11 million to $24.2
million.
Nearly 40% decline in export volume
Foreign-exchange revenue down more than 30%
The United States remains the main buyer, with a 50% tariff on
the product
Raw timber performance
Raw timber, made up mainly of pine and eucalyptus, also posted
negative results. Export volume fell from 366,000 tonnes to
232,000 tonnes in the same period, while foreign-exchange
revenue dropped from $43.6 million to $30.3 million.
36% decline in timber export volume
Foreign-exchange revenue also down
Main importers include China and India
These figures highlight the need for greater attention to export
policies and support for small producers, who are essential to
the sustainability of family farming in Brazil.
