Henning Larsen to build timber-framed public swimming pool in Sweden
[Oct 6, 2025]

Henning Larsen Architects will design Centralbadet, a large public sports and swimming center in Gothenburg, which is planned to open in 2031. The concept was developed in collaboration with Winell & Jern Architects, Ramboll, and sports science expert John Dolsten.

The future complex, covering an area of almost 52 sq m, will combine Olympic-sized swimming pools, family recreation areas, four sports halls, outdoor pools, saunas, a gym, a basketball court and a cafe. The project also includes public spaces, wheelchair spaces and bicycle parking.

The Centralbadet concept honors Valhallabadet, Gothenburg's historic bathhouse, continuing the tradition of public bathing and health care.

Visitors will be able to freely move around the building and climb to the roof, where treadmills, outdoor exercise machines, terraces, and landscaped areas will be located, continuing the park experience in architecture.

The construction strategy combines durability and sustainability. Concrete provides structural stability for the pools, while long-span glued timber beams and other timber elements reduce the carbon footprint and perform well in humid environments.

Wood is also used for interior partitions and ceilings, with all elements designed to be dismantled and reused.

The facade will be made of recycled bricks, and green roofs will ensure biodiversity and rainwater management.
