
Germany: softwood in great demand
The demand for conifer logs continued to grow in August. For
example, 80% of the participants in our HMI reporting network
report an increasing demand for spruce logs.
Germany: Oak roundwood exports increase
Between January and June 2025, exports of oak raw wood increased
by 26% compared to the corresponding period of the previous
year. China, the most important country of destination, was 38%
more than in the corresponding period of the previous year.
Belgium also received more than that.
Germany: Beech sawn timber exports slightly increased
In the first six months of 2025, 0.5% more beech sawn timber was
exported than in the corresponding period of the previous year.
This marks a break in the downward trend that has dominated the
market since 2018, which was only interrupted by a noticeable
growth trend in 2021.
Finnish softwood lumber exports up by 21%
From January to July, Finland saw its softwood lumber exports
grow by more than a fifth year on year, to be precise by 829,000
m3 to a total of 4.76 million m3. Exports to the EU and the MENA
region increased, while a decrease was recorded in shipments to
China.
Sweden increases lumber exports to the USA and Europe
In the first six months, Sweden exported 7 million m3 of
softwood lumber, i.e. 2% more than in the same period last year,
but 6% less than in the record half-year of 2023.
Czech harvest volume decreases in line with damaged wood
According to the Czech Statistical Office, 17.8 million m3 of
wood were harvested in the Czech Republic in 2024, of which 8.5
million m3 were damaged wood. In line with the decline in spruce
stands, the volume of damaged wood is also decreasing
noticeably. The peak was reached in 2020. Back then, almost 34
million m3 of damaged wood were harvested – out of a total
logging volume of just under 35 million m3.
Russia: Lumber production at last year’s level
At -1%, the Russian (hardwood and softwood) lumber production
remained nearly stable at last year’s level in the first seven
months. This is according to the Russian statistical office
Rosstat.
