84 Lumber has added another component plant to help service the
growing Detroit market.
The company’s newest plant is located at 6701 Wales Road in
Northwood, Ohio. The 75,000-square-foot building sits on 11
acres. 84 Lumber associates will build wall panels, roof trusses
and floor trusses that will cater to market demand in
northwestern Ohio, northeastern Indiana, and southeastern
Michigan, with the primary focus being the Detroit area.
“This new truss plant allows us to better serve the customers in
the Detroit and Toledo markets, and adds to our capacity in the
surrounding areas,” said 84 Lumber’s Central Divisional Vice
President Phil Garuccio. “It gives us the ability to be more
competitive and improve build cycle times for our customers.”
The plant will begin operating this month, with 22 production
associates and seven design and office staff currently working
at the truss plant. The company plans to hire a total of 50
associates, with the possibility of hiring an additional 20
associates in the future.
84 Lumber offers a ladder of opportunity through its Production
Manager trainee (PMT) program. The 12-month training program is
designed to prepare an apprentice in the components sector for a
Production Manager position, with a mix of on-the-job and
classroom training, leadership courses, a Lean Green Belt
program, and emerging leadership training. The component plant’s
general manager and plant manager are associates who were
promoted from within.
The plant’s general manager, Wade Fuery, went through the
‘ladder of opportunity’ structure, according to 84 Lumber’s
Divisional Vice President of Installed Sales and Manufacturing,
Ken Kucera. “Fuery was previously a plant manager in Mansfield,
Ohio, before his promotion. And Francesco Pascolini, who started
as a production manager trainee in Franklin, Indiana, is now the
plant manager.”
