The Cedar Springs containerboard factory will close by the end
of 2025.
Georgia-Pacific plans to permanently close its containerboard
mill in Cedar Springs, Ga., later this year. According to the
company, most positions will be eliminated by August 1, and all
535 jobs at the sprawling factory "will be impacted."
The company says "various factors" influenced the decision,
without specifying any in particular, noting that it does "not
believe that the mill can competitively serve our customers in
the long term."
The move comes just weeks after the company announced the
closure of its plywood plant in Emporia, Va., all while marking
upgrades in S.C. and expansion in Florida.
According to GP, production will continue for a limited time as
the Cedar Springs site fulfills its final customer commitments.
Georgia-Pacific says its focus in the coming weeks and months is
to "continue to safely operate while supporting employees during
the transition," adding that it is working with employees to
provide access to local support agencies and job placement
resources.
