According to a press release from the German Pellet Institute (DEPI)
on 27 March 2025, the price of woodchips (quality class A2) rose
by 12.9 per cent in the first quarter of 2025 compared to the
previous quarter. The average price for a purchase of 80 bulk
cubic metres (SRM) is now €32.00/SRM net or 3.56 ct/kWh. There
was also an increase of 11.1 per cent for class A1 woodchips.
Nevertheless, this climate-friendly fuel remains significantly
cheaper than fossil alternatives: Compared to heating oil, the
price advantage is around 54 per cent, and even 66 per cent
compared to natural gas.
The reason for the price increase is the availability of sawmill
residue at the beginning of the year. ‘As many sawmills reduced
their cutting in January, there was also less waste wood, which
was responsible for the price increase,’ explains Martin Bentele,
Managing Director of the DEPI. In the meantime, cutting activity
has increased again, so that the market situation is easing.
Despite the recent price increase, wood chips remain one of the
most economically attractive heating options and the cheapest
wood fuel. ‘Despite seasonal fluctuations, heating with wood
chips offers high price stability and cost security in the long
term, especially compared to fossil fuels,’ continues Bentele.
