
The total export value of Finland’s forest industry products in
December 2024 amounted to Euro 0.94 billion, marking a 5%
decline compared to the real monthly average for 2023, according
to the Natural Resources Institute Finland (Luke). The export
value of lumber increased by 4%, driven by rising prices,
although export volume fell by 5%. The pulp and paper industry
saw a 5% decrease in export volume, while its export value
dropped by 3%.
In December, Finland imported 0.46 million m3 of wood, 10% more
than the previous year's monthly average. Pulpwood imports
remained stable compared to 2023 but increased by 3% relative to
the monthly average. Log imports reached their highest level in
2024, exceeding the 2023 average by 58%. The import volume of
wood chips also rose by 29%.
During the October–December 2024 period, the export value of
forest industry products reached Euro 2.96 billion, averaging
Euro 0.98 billion per month. This represented a 6% decline from
the third quarter. Paper accounted for 20% of the total export
value, paperboard 26%, pulp 24%, sawn timber 18%, and plywood
5%.
The wood products industry exports amounted to Euro 0.78 billion
in the last quarter, increasing by 3% from the July-September
value and nearly 9% year-over-year. Meanwhile, pulp and paper
industry exports dropped to Euro 2.18 billion, down 9% from the
previous quarter but up 4% compared to the same period in 2023.
The real export value of paperboard stood at Euro 0.76 billion,
declining 16% quarter-over-quarter but rising 10%
year-over-year.
Finland imported 1.38 million m3 of wood in the last quarter of
2024, a 7% increase from the same period in 2023. Compared to
the previous quarter, the volume remained nearly unchanged.
Latvia accounted for 40% of the imports, Estonia 32%, and Sweden
14%. Pulpwood made up 57% of the imports, wood chips 29%, logs
2%, and by-products and firewood 12%.
