The plant is part of the Viobond international project, which
involves eight partners from Latvia, Estonia, Finland, Spain and
Germany. The project is led by the Latvian company Latvijas
Finieris.
"We purchase chemical raw materials, carry out the synthesis
process, which results in resins, which are then used in
production to make adhesive mixtures that are either glued or
impregnated with materials. The essence of the project is to
replace some of the fossil resin components with lignin, a
by¡ªproduct of chemical processing of wood," said Janis Tsiems,
Chairman of the Management Board of Latvijas Finieris.
Phenol-formaldehydes, which are obtained from minerals, are
usually used in the production of synthetic resins. Partial
replacement of phenol with lignin makes production more
environmentally friendly.
The construction of the plant will cost the company 40 million
euros. The construction is planned to be completed next year,
and the project will be fully implemented in 2027. Latvijas
Finieris plans to sell products in 70 countries.
