The Indonesian Embassy in London initiated a stakeholders
dialogue with the United Kingdrom (UK) timber industry on
Wednesday (8/1/2025).
This initiative forms part of the Indonesian government's
efforts to boost timber exports to the UK.
In his opening remarks, the Indonesian Ambassador to the UK
Desra Percaya highlighted the persistent negative stigma
surrounding Indonesian timber products due to deforestation
concerns.
"Indonesian timber products are renowned for their beauty,
durability, and quality, but they are still perceived as
unsustainable, despite Indonesia¡¯s implementation of various
programs, such as the Timber Legality Assurance System (SVLK)
and Sustainable Forest Management, to meet the sustainability
criteria of the UK and European schemes," he stated.
The forum reached a consensus on the desire to increase timber
imports from Indonesia.
"I have been doing business with Indonesia for over 40 years and
have always been satisfied with the quality of Indonesian
timber," Timber Development UK Chairman Chris Sutton said.
Meanwhile, EFECA Managing Director Emily Fripp, noted that the
business sector is still awaiting updates on the UK government's
policy regarding UK Forest Risk Commodities, which is currently
under internal discussion.
"However, I am confident that this policy will not significantly
impact timber products from Indonesia," FRipp said.
In December 2022, Indonesia updated its SVLK system to enhance
transparency and traceability by utilizing information
technology and geolocation. This system has been recognized by
the European Union, ensuring that Indonesian timber products do
not require additional due diligence procedures.
