The first full trading week of the year got off to a slow start
as frigid weather gripped much of the U.S. and Canada. But with
temperatures slowly warming, framing lumber trading heated up on
Thursday. A rally in futures acted as a catalyst for some and generated
confidence for others. Wholesalers extended long positions and
distributors covered early year needs. Prices firmed, and some climbed
higher. 2x4 9-foot studs were a standout in many species. The Random
Lengths Framing Lumber Composite rose $4, to $394.

Random Lengths Panel Market Report
Structural panel trading lacked energy. OSB sales improved
marginally in most regions. Moderating weather in the South prompted
more buyers to jump off the fence and readily cover short-term
needs. Southern Pine plywood sales improved as the week wore on, but
buyers remained cautious and most prices finished unchanged. Several
mills lost a day or two of production because of the cold weather.
With dealers seeing little business due to cold weather across much
of the nation, western Fir plywood sales maintained the lethargic
pace of the previous holiday weeks.
