Domestic Log Prices

Brazil

Wood product prices have been falling in US Dollar terms in the domestic market as a result of a further devaluation of the Real against the US Dollar (around 6.5% between April and May alone). However, it is worth noticing that prices in Real have actually increased by between 1 - 4.5%.

In the case of tropical timber, the rain season has ended in the tropical north and larger volumes of tropical logs are expected to be available for the next few months so tropical wood prices should remain stable.

Report from Brazil

As a protest against the position of IBAMA (Institute of Environment and Renewable Natural Resources) in not endorsing forest management plans the Mato Grosso trade unions and logging companies blockaded a major federal highway recently. Reports claim some 130 trucks, 150 motorcars, and 35 buses blocked the road in protest.

The organisers of the demonstration expected thousands of people to join the so-called "Pro-Forest Management Movement". The problem was caused by a decision to increase from 50% to 80%, the designated legal reserve in the forest areas. On its part IBAMA is demanding revised forest management plans which it points out must be in conformity with the Forest Code.
