More Tropical Certification -

Stung by continuing criticism from western environmental groups for their forest management practices, the worlds major tropical timber producers have this week resolved to strengthen their forest management methods and more aggressively pursue environmental certification. That is the expected outcome from a decision by the International Tropical Timber Council to finance joint action by civil society organisations and private sector tropical timber producers. "The decision is a first step towards an innovative approach that will assist our quest to grow the trade in tropical timber from sustainably managed sources," says ITTC chair Jurgen Blaser. Meanwhile, the council has also committed US$6.6 million in grants for initiatives promoting sustainable forest management, greater transparency in the tropical timber trade and development of sustainable tropical forest-based industries.
