Bright Future Predicted For LVL

A 30% increase in global demand for laminated veneer lumber (LVL) by 2006 is forecast in a new study of international trends by BIS Shrapnel Forestry Group. From 2.3 million m3 in 2001, the company expects demand to pass 3 million cubic m3 by 2004 as the wood industry switches from large, old-growth trees to smaller logs from regrowth forests and plantations.
The study¡¯s principal author, New Zealand¡¯s Andre Neuman, says the North American pattern of replacing sawn timber with LVL in many structural applications is about to be mirrored in Australasia following the development of two new LVL plants in New Zealand ¨C Nelson Pine Industries (Sumitomo Forestry) and Carter Holt Harvey¡¯s Marden Point operation.
Outside North America, the uptake of LVL has been most notable in Japan where demand has been growing despite a fall-off in new housing starts. The main areas of use there are for semi-structural applications like stair parts, wall studs and floor joists.
