US Hardwoods in China

AHEC has revealed that the export value of 5 major American hardwood products, (lumber, veneer, wooden strips, parquet and plywood) to China was US$212 million, in 2001 up by 9.3% over 2000. Mr. Chen Xizheng, AHEC Director of the Southeast Asia and China Regional Representative Office commented that American hardwood product exports to China were influenced by strong market demand and the consistant growth in the economy.

The rapid increase disposable income and the pace of development of China's business and real estate industry have opened a huge market for the United States, especially in the area of high-end furniture and interior decoration.

In the past year, two American hardwood species- red oak and red alder were particularly well received in the China market. Exports of red oak lumber and veneer amounted to over US$55 million and of red alder lumber to as much as US$24.9 million.

Exports of veneer to China also grew. Demand for hardwood species including maple, walnut, cherry, yellow poplar, white oak, Chinese ash, hickory and birch was encouraging. Of these, the export values of walnut lumber and cherry veneer amounted to US$13.3 million (up 93% ) and US$16.4 million respectively (up 47%). Mr. Chen pointed out that red alder was one of the American hardwood species most welcomed by Chinese market.
