Brazil:The Mahogany trade is rapidly losing importance in the domestic market
¡¾2002.05.08¡¿

Brazil

The Mahogany trade is rapidly losing importance in the domestic market as well as an export product. The Government restrictions on harvesting, transportation, production and trade continues and it is not likely that will be changed over the next few months. As a result, no Mahogany logs are expected to be harvested in 2002.

Even if the restrictions are lifted in the next few months the only supply available will be that remaining in inventories at the mills and these are reported as low.

Demand for tropical sawnwood continues to be positive but prices have not reacted much. Exporters have reported that the market is showing signs of has improvements in Europe and in Asia, but the US market continues to be weak. The American market is expected to improve over the next months as some new orders are being seen.
