Housing Starts Strong For Month of January

January 2002 Starts At Fastest Pace Since February 2000

The U. S. Census Bureau reports housing starts for January 2002 were at a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 1,678,000 units, an increase of 99,000 units (+6.3%) from 1,579,000 units for December 2001, and up 12,000 units (+1.0%) from 1,666,000 units for January 2001.

January 2002 single family starts are at 1,345,000 units, an increase of 46,000 units (+3.5%) from 1,299,000 units for December 2001, and up 9,000 units (+1.0%) from 1,336,000 units for January 2001. Single family housing starts represent 80.1% of the seasonally adjusted rate of total starts reported for January 2002.

Building permits, often a barometer for future activity, are at a seasonally adjusted rate of 1,706,000 units for January 2002, up 52,000 units (+3.1%) from 1,654,000 units for December 2001, but down 18,000 units (-1.0%) from 1,724,000 units in January 2001.

The housing market continues to maintain resilience in spite of overall economic conditions. The last time the monthly pace was stronger was February 2000, when monthly figures were reported at 1,745,000 units.

The U.S. Census Bureau survey of privately owned housing starts includes a six-percent plus and minus margin of error.
