Random Lengths Lumber Market Report

With just a few days of trading between the holidays, low expectations for activity were largely met. Producers fell back on order files, buoyed in part by downtime through the holiday period. This helped many rebuff any counteroffers that buyers circulated. Distributors and dealers filled inventory holes and purchased little more, as most were content to see what develops in early January. Heavy absenteeism was a factor. Meanwhile, many of those on the job Wednesday and Thursday were busy taking inventory or wrapping up other year-end duties.

Random Lengths Panel Market Report

Structural panel sales slowed to a crawl, which most traders shrugged off as normal for year-end. Skeleton crews manned most OSB sales offices across North America, as many traders took time off between the holidays. Southern Pine plywood trading was about as uneventful as expected with absenteeism following the holiday and a string of heavy rainstorms sweeping through Texas and much of the South. Activity in western Fir plywood markets was dull, which surprised no one given the time of year.
