Producers kept hefty upward pressure on framing
lumber prices, led by Canadian mills levering
quotes higher on expectations of punishing
duties that could be imposed by the U.S. in the
spring. A scramble to cover needs tapered off in
the latter half of the week, as buyers hit
inventory targets or grew wary amid steep hikes
in prices. Mills boasted order files of at least
two weeks. The sharp double-digit gains for the
week pushed the Random Lengths Framing Lumber
Composite Price up $25, the sharpest weekly gain
since a $26 hike in August 2003.

Random Lengths Panel Market Report
Structural panel trading surged, catching the wave evident in
framing lumber markets. A strong upward push continued in OSB prices
on active sales Wednesday and Thursday. Producers pushed order files
into March, and either pulled off the market or priced defensively
by Friday. Another week of strong demand pushed Southern Pine
plywood prices higher and order files out. The trading pace in
western Fir plywood was steady to active, although not to the extent
seen last week. Sales quieted in late trading.
