Winter weather took much of the blame for a
disappointing start to the year for many framing
lumber traders. While frigid temperatures gave
way to a warming trend across much of the
continent, heavy rain kept a lid on activity in
California and parts of the South. Other issues
and distractions played a role, including
uncertainty surrounding the U.S.-Canada trade
dispute and a new administration in Washington.
Warmer weather eased recent transportation
problems, although trucking issues continued to
beset some traders.

Random Lengths Panel Market Report
Structural panel prices faded amid lukewarm demand. OSB
producers in all regions were open to small counters, but buyers
showed little inclination to bolster inventories. Weather-related
issues kept loads from flowing smoothly to yards in many parts of
North America. Southern Pine plywood sales were steady for most
traders, but some producers were willing to take mild discounts to
extend order files. After a slow start, the pace in western Fir
plywood picked up on Wednesday and carried through the end of the
week.
