The holiday-shortened week got off to a fast
start on Tuesday, driven in large part by the
day’s jump in futures. Follow-through the rest
of the week was hit and miss, with futures
tailing off both Wednesday and Thursday. The big
move on the board followed a surge of orders in
the cash market at Western S-P-F mills the
previous Friday, with many buyers already having
left for the long holiday weekend. Blocks sold
late in the period extended order files at some
mills, reportedly to late September and early
October.

Random Lengths Panel Market Report
Structural panel markets lacked energy. OSB sales fell short of
the brisk pace many traders had anticipated, especially following
last week’s surge. Nonetheless, most sheathing prices moved higher
on momentum from last week. Slack demand for Southern Pine rated
sheathing left mills willing to negotiate, particularly on railcars.
However, buyers were most interested in mixed truckloads. The pace
was slower in western Fir plywood markets, but business was still
steady after the Monday holiday.
