In
2004, some 680 American sawmills produced an estimated 27 million m3 of
hardwood. This compares to the situation in 1997 when over 1000 sawmills
had an output of 33 million m3.
Today the US hardwood milling industry is much leaner and comprises larger
and more efficient mills. Thanks to higher prices and better margins,
turnover improved from US$4400 million in 1997 to US$6500 million in 2004.
