China’s consumption would be 18.5 billion m3

Zhang Jianmin, from the Forestry Farm and Forest Tree Seedlings Station, State Forestry Administration, said that China’s forest tree seed and seedlings sectors have huge development potentials in commercial forest, ecological and urban greening. China’s consumption forest resources would be at least 18.5 billion m3 over the next 50 years, which is two times as much as the past 50 years. Therefore, it is necessary to plant large areas of commercial forests and ecological and protective forests to promote healthy development of ecological conditions. It is estimated that 144 million mu (1 ha = 15 mu) of forest resources must be planted for national forest cover to rise 1%, or 220 million mu if accounting for consumption during tree growing. This means that 44 million kg of seeds and 40.4 billion seedlings will be needed. Mr. Zhang said that on average about 73.8 million mu of annual plantation were added in the past few years. The annual demand for seeds and seedlings were about 14 million kg and 14 billion seedlings.
