Francophone West African Log Prices

Markets have consolidated the price gains achieved in March and are still very firm.  The only exception is Sapele, where the price for LM grade is down Euro 15 and B grade is down Euro 7.5 per cubic metre FOB.

Otherwise there were no significant price movements in April.  Some exporters in the Central African Republic and Congo Brazzaville are reported as selling Sipo logs only if buyers will take a proportion of Sapele. This deal has not, so far, tempted German buyers though there is now heavy demand for Sipo to replace the best production and top grade Meranti which is on offer at higher prices and is increasingly scarce.

West African exporters are closely watching the Asian timber situation where Indonesia's success in virtually halting the trade in illegally sourced logs and sawn products is reported to have caused a sudden and substantial shortage of raw materials in the main producing countries in the region.  This shortage applies to Indonesian mills as well as to others that had relied on supplies from Indonesian sources.

It is reported that Asian log and lumber prices have firmed quite noticeably, especially for the higher valued species such as Selangan Batu and Merbau and there is no doubt of  the impact of the very tight log supply situation.

West African producers report strong demand, especially from buyers for China, while at the same time tighter harvest restrictions in Congo Brazzaville and Cameroon continue to reduce the availability of export logs.

European log importers are said to be cautious because of the price escalation and are holding off purchases from Asia and West Africa, although some business is being concluded and producers are generally reporting that price are likely to increase further.

New regulations in the Cameroon requires exporters to present documentation to prove that all taxes have been paid in full before the export of logs and lumber will be authorized.  The removal of the previous grace period which allowed a period of credit before the tax had to be paid is causing cash flow problems for the less well financed exporters who were able to pay the taxes after receiving payment from buyers.  This further increase in the financial burden is said to be impacting production volumes.

For the month of February 2005 (latest available data), PNG exported a total of 196,452 Cu.m of logs with an FOB value of US$11.33 mil. The main markets were China, Japan, Korea, Taiwan P.o.C and the average price for PNG logs in February 2005 was US$57.69 per Cu.m.

China was the major market taking 76% of the logs (around 49,700 Cu.m), followed by Japan taking 14.5% and then Korea taking 7.2%.

The predominant log grade (84%) exported from PNG is saw/veneer grade from natural forest selective harvesting operations.

Of that log grade, the predominant species exported in ranked by volume are malas (Homalium spp), calophyllum (Callohyllum spp)taun (Pometia pinnata), terminalia (Terminalia spp), and dillenia (Dillenai spp). Of the plantation species exported, Japan and Korea were the major markets for Kamarere (E deglupta) in February 2005.

The Brazilian Association of Planted Forest Producers (ABRAF) has attempted raise the government awareness regarding the need to double Brazil's planted forest area, which currently is at 5.5 million hectares, over the next 10 years.

Planted forests have been the main source of supply raw material to pulp and paper, iron and  furniture industries but Brazil currently suffers from shortage of roundwood from planted forests.

In the of  South Brazil the furniture industry has begun to import pine from Uruguay and Argentina. In the Southern State of Paran¨¢, pine log shortages are said by local analysts to be running at about 9 million cubic metres a year, a good argument for increasing plantations.

In the State of Minas Gerais, which has the largest eucalyptus plantation (1.6 million hectares), many are concerned about the deficit. With the expanded production in the iron industry it will be necessary to increase the planted area by a minimum 39% in order to fulfill the roundwood requirement of this sector alone.

Prices are again unchanged but very firm and analysts are forecasting a rise during the next few weeks as the shortage of supply and longer shipping time from Asia will favour West African mills that can offer a faster service.

Low production in the region continues to be a problem and European buyers are tending to buy hand to mouth in smaller volumes and are perhaps being unsettled by the firmer price trend and the very much higher Asian prices for favoured species.

Prices of solid wood products for export have been stable over the past two weeks. Even with a significant devaluation of the US dollar against BRL, as well as recent taxes increases on exports of Brazilian pine plywood in Europe and in the US, exports continue to rise. However, particularly in case of plywood, prices are expected to drop in the short term.

In recent months, exports of solid wood products have broken new records nearly every, both in volume and in value. In March 2005, this continued. Exports were once again at new highs.

Brazilian exports of solid wood products were US$355.6 million in March, up 21% in comparison to March 2004 (US$294.8 million).

Exports of Brazilian tropical sawnwood, rose 18.8% in volume in comparison to March 2004. In volume and value, exports in March 2005 represented, respectively, 168,800 cubic metres and US$50.7 million;, compared to 142,100 cubic metres and US$39,4 million exported in March 2004.

In March 2005, Brazil exported US$32.2 million in pine sawnwood, corresponding to 170,500 cubic metres. In March 2004, pine sawnwood exports were US$ 23.1 million from 148,000 cubic metres. Exports of pine sawnwood have increased 15.2% in volume in comparison to the previous year.

Euro 16.26 mil. was realized from exports of  40,803 cubic metres of wood products in March  up almost 13% in value and 7.50% in volume compared to March 2004.

In the first three months of 2005, exports of wood products totalled Euro 40,665,231 from and 104,930 cubic metres a 9.10% in increase in value and 5.29% in volume over the same period last year.

Wawa was the main species exported in Jan-March 2005 and earned Euro 6,692,722 (up16.5%)

Europe, notably countries in the EU continue to be Ghana's major trading partners for wood products accounting for Euro 23.18million exports for Jan-March 2005. Key markets include Italy, France, Germany, the United Kingdom, Belgium, Spain, Ireland and  Holland.

The US accounted for 15% of the total export value during Jan-March 2005 as compared to 14% 2004. This market maintains its dominance as the most lucrative destination for Ghana's Plywood, Kiln dry Lumber  and Rotary Veneer exports.  The ECOWAS countries (mainly Senegal, Nigeria Gambia and Togo) took 63% (Euro 3.81million) of Ghana's trade with African countries Jan-March 2005.

Plywood and Lumber (Air dried) continue to interest the Senegalese and Nigerian  markets. The markets new to Ghana in Asia namely India, Malaysia, Taiwan P.o.C, China, Singapore, Thailand and Philippines together contributed Euro 5.90 million (14.51%) to the total of Ghana wood export value in  Jan-March 2005.

India continues to be the leading importer of Ghana's Teak air dry lumber.  The Middle East countries, notably Saudi Arabia, Lebanon, United Arab Emirate and Israel together imported Euro 1.35 million (3.32%) of the total export value for 2005.
