In order to deal with the falling dollar manufacturers and exporters of wood products in the State of Maranhão have invested in technical and managerial improvements and increased productivity to remain competitive.

Out of the Real 12 million invested by CIKEL (a company producing sawnwood, plywood and flooring), Real 1 million was used in its Itinga mill, located 625 km from São Lu¨ªs (State capital). The plant is one of the seven of the CIKEL Group and produces plywood for export to the United States, Europe, the Caribbean and Mexico.

During 2005 the company will apparently reactivate the Bela Vista mill in Dom Elizeu, in the State of Par¨¢ along the boarder with the State of Maranhão. The plant has ben down since December 2003. This plant produced floor base used as a wooden raw-material for flooring manufactured by two others CIKEL plants in the State of Par¨¢ and Paran¨¢. When the plant reopens this month it will  produce about 1,000 cubic metres of floor base a month.

Even with financial strain as a result of exchange rate problems, SHALOM S/A, another timber company will is reporting that it will increase its production of solid doors to supply demand from regular customers in the United States.

This year, the orders for doors have increased and the plant, located in the Industrial District of São Lu¨ªs, aims to export 12,000 wooden doors in 2005. Last year 10,000 doors were exported, the same number as in 2003.

Executives of timber companies in the region believe that decline in the dollar exchange rate will  only be temporary but they expect fluctuations in the rate to continue for some time.
