Pine
plywood export prices continue to fall and analysts say that the shortage
of shipping space between January and April, caused by high demand for
cargo space in China, indirectly influenced in this price decline.
Many Brazilian pine plywood shipments were held at the ports
waiting for vessel and when space became available all shipments were made
at the same time over-supplying the US markets.
It
was reported that pine plywood, which was once fetching US$ 300 per cubic
metre, could only manage to attract US$ 180 per cubic metre.
In
the first half of 2004, total Brazilian pine plywood exports reached US$
267 million, 94% higher than in the January-June period of 2003 (US$ 137
million). Brazilian tropical plywood exports in the first six months of
2004 reached US$ 172.7 million, an increase of 62% year on year.
Export
growth at risk
The
rate of Brazilian export growth is being put at risk by new shipping
problems, this time the shortage of shipping space. Exporters are saying
that it is not unusual for shipping containers to be overbooked and for
freight rates to skyrocket.
World
demand for shipping space, particularly from the US and China, is
responsible for a growth in maritime transport of over 8% this year. In
Brazil, increased exports are demanding a 15% increase in available space
but is just not available. The situation is made worse, say exporters, due
to the mismatched export and import flows. For every three containers
shipped from Brazil to the US today only one returns. As a result of this
situation Brazilian companies face losing clients and business abroad.
The
trade estimates, that merchandise takes 45 days to reach North America, 30
days to arrive at Latin American and Asian destinations, 40 days to reach
Europe, and 60 days to arrive in Africa, and the Middle East. There were
no such delays in 2003.
Depending
on the route, freight rates have gone up between 15% and 45% this year.
Currently it costs around US$ 1,500 to send a 20 ft container container to
Antwerp, last year, this cost was 30% lower.

Pine plywood exports
From
January to June of 2004, Brazilian pine plywood exports totalled of US$267
million, 94% higher than in the January-June period of 2003 (US$ 137
million). At this rate, pine plywood exports for the year could be more
than US$ 500 million, an increase of 55% over 2003.
In
terms of volume, the expectation is that Brazilian pine plywood exports in
2004 will be around 2.5 million cubic metres (2003 1.5 million cubic
metres). The increase in exports is largely the result of the housing boom
in the US fuelled by the low interest policy in the US.
The US market (including Puerto Rico and Mexico, it is common for
plywood to be taken across the border) has absorbed about US$149.4 million
in Brazilian pine plywood.
In
the European market, where CE marking for wood-based panels has been
mandatory since April, Brazilian pine plywood exports were also
significantly up in the first half of the year, reaching a total of US$
105.7 million.
However,
plywood exporters will have to face new challenges in the second half. In
the US, it is possible that demand for plywood will not be as strong as in
the first half as interest rates are set to increase. Also, in Europe the
import quota for Brazilian plywood has already been met so a 7% duty is
applied to additional imports.
