Domestic Log Prices

Brazil

There was a very slight increase in wood prices in on the domestic market. Wood prices in US Dollars increased due to a further devaluation of the Real against the US Dollar.

Pine wood product prices continue to be affected by shortages of logs but, in the case of tropical wood, the arrival of the dry season and unhindered harvesting will push prices down.

Ghana has established about 43,000 hectares of forest plantations since the President launched the plantation development initiative in 2001. This was made known by the Minister for Lands and Forestry, Prof. Dominic Fobih at a three-day international workshop at the Forestry Research Institute of Ghana (FORIG), near Kumasi.

Exports up to June 2004 totalled Euro 15.0 million from a volume of 40,436 cubic metres. The corresponding figures for 2003 was Euro 17.25 million and 34,600 cubic metres.

For the period under review exports of Profile Boards, Furniture Parts, Parquet Floorings and Mouldings saw increases. This is due to the continuous expansion being undertaken by most sawmills in Ghana with the view to produce added value products.

There were declines in exports of Kiln dried lumber (-8.33%), Rotary Veneer (-26.62%), Curls Veneer (-45.11%) and Plywood (-18.75%) and local analysts point to inadequate supply of and weak overseas demand as the main reasons for the decline.
