In May, Brazilian wood product exports fell as port problems prevented some Brazilian exporters from meeting their orders. Export prices are expected to rise in June as the European Union annual plywood import quota of 650,000 cubic metres is close to being fulfilled. Once imports surpass 550,000 cubic metres the EU will declare a so-called "critical" situation and impose a 7% tariff on all subsequent shipments. Freight rates are also expected to increase and this will push up landed prices.

In the first four months of 2004, total Brazilian pine sawnwood exports fell 16.5% (US$ 76 million (US$ 91 million in January-April of 2003). Tropical sawnwood exports, on the other hand, grew to US$ 59.4 million, 34.4% more than in January-April period of 2003.
