 Francophone West African Log Prices

The market has improved with modest price gains for several species and prices in general are reported as very firm for Europe and for East Asian buyers.

Analysts are reporting that market sentiment has improved in Gabon and buyers for the Chinese market finally had to accept the FOB prices and the higher freight charges.

Gabon's Okoume monthly export log production level is now reported at only about 40,000 cubic metres, a drastic decline from the previously usual 80/100,000cubic metres per month. One reason for the drop in export log production is that there has been an marked increase in the production of veneer and plywood in country.

The current production of Okoume logs in Gabon is only 60% of levels seen recently and, as anticipated in the previous report, there is likely to be a shortage of logs in the market. Peeler species, especially Okoume, Andoung and Ayous  are very much in demand by local mills and from overseas buyers.

Freight rates to China have fallen slightly to US$77/82 for Okoume and US$100/110 for red species.  For Europe the major shipping lines have held freight charges at Euro 82 per cubic metre but some smaller charter vessels have come into the market with freights around Euro per cubic metre.

The situation at the ports is now very different from the situation two months ago when few vessels were seen.

FOB prices have been reported as moving higher. Sipo which has been out of favour, but now prices for this timber have started to recover and are reported as up Euro15 per cubic metre. Prices for Niangon, Bosse and Movingui are also up Euro15 and Iroko prices are up as much as Euro 30.5 per cubic metre on the back of strong demand. All indications are that log prices will hold on to the gains made through the second quarter.

Peru
In Loreto NE Peru, the timber industry is working hard to introduce new species such as  Capirona (Calycophylum spruceanum), Requia (Guarea guidonia), Marupa (Simarouba amara) and Panguana (Brosimum utile) into the international market. The industry in the area has also invested in production plants for added value products such as furniture, furniture blanks, finger jointed boards, mouldings, decking and wood flooring. In parallel with these developments Loreto's KD capacity has expanded and this area is said to have the largest KD capacity in the country.

While the industry claims to have taken the initiative, many in the trade are frustrated at the slow pace of government support for the further development of the timber sector in the area.

At the moment there are severe infrastructure handicaps, especially related to the shipping opportunities and port facilities. At the moment shipments, which travel down the Amazon through Brazil, can only be made every two months to the USA and Mexico and if a company tries to export to Asia or the EU the shipping costs are very high because transshipments is necessary.  The trade is also calling for assistance in developing its market information capacity and for help in market promotion.

Local analysts comment that, considering the potential of Loreto, support to the timber sector in the area would yield significant benefits.

International Sawnwood

Francophone West Africa

Sawnwood prices have not followed the increases seen in log prices largely because as local production is adequate for the current demand. The sawmills in the region are said to be busy and report good business.

Exporters are speculating that China will soon increase imports of sawnwood and that this will help firm up prices for the major red species. Currently the strongest demand is for the secondary timbers but having said that African Mahogany and Sapele are in favour.

In Cameroon, veneer and plywood mills are facing very high taxes and some are reported to be considering closing or moving operations, infact one mill has transferred production to Gabon

One or two sawmills also are reducing production and one mill will, apparently, be closing down.  Through out the region manufacturers continue to complain about the many new and increased taxes.
